"Solmate is a daily ritual. A wellness essential. A love letter to your future skin."

What is UPF?

UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) is used for clothing and fabrics and measures how much both UVA and UVB rays are blocked from reaching your skin.

The Skin Cancer Foundation’s seal of approval is only given to fabric with a UPF above 30, with UPF 50+ being the highest amount of protection.

What is SPF?

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is used for sunscreens and measures how well a product protects your skin from UVB rays, which cause sunburn and contribute to skin cancer.

UVA vs. UVB rays - What’s the difference?

UVA and UVB rays are both types of ultraviolet radiation from the sun, but they affect the skin in different ways. UVA rays are often called the “aging rays” because they penetrate deep into the skin and are responsible for long-term damage like wrinkles, dark spots, and loss of elasticity. These rays are present year-round, even on cloudy days, and can pass through glass—so you’re still exposed while driving or sitting near a window.

UVB rays, on the other hand, are known as the “burning rays.” They affect the skin’s surface and are the main cause of sunburn. UVB is more intense during the summer and peak sunlight hours, and it plays a major role in the development of skin cancer.

To fully protect your skin, you need broad-spectrum coverage that defends against both UVA and UVB rays—whether through sunscreen or UPF 50+ clothing.

Regular clothing vs. UPF clothing

When it comes to sun protection, not all fabrics are created equal. Everyday materials like cotton and linen typically have low UPF ratings—usually between 5 and 15—meaning they may block as little as 20% of harmful UV rays. In contrast, UPF clothing is specifically designed to shield your skin from both UVA and UVB rays.

At Solmate, our collection is crafted from certified UPF 50+ fabrics, which block 98% of the sun’s most damaging radiation. Each piece is independently tested by a third party to ensure you’re getting reliable, high-quality protection—because your skin deserves nothing less.
